Obituary for Mabel Mildred Ware

Mabel Mildred Ware
WARE, Mabel M.
Passed away peacefully at the Stayner Care Centre on Thursday August 30th 2018 at the age of 94, just hours before being honoured by the Canadian National Exhibition Oldtimers’ Softball Association in recognition for her contribution to the game of Softball.
Mabel was an outstanding ball player. Her pitching skills made her be noticed by scouts in the United States. The Second World War was starting and instead of choosing to play ball with the top ladies’ teams in North America she chose to serve her country and become a Private with the Canadian Women’s Army Corp. She was stationed in Washington DC. She made life long friends during this time and later was involved in many reunions of the CWAC. Following the Second World War she worked as a Fine Art Restorer at T. Eaton and Co LTD., while she continued to polish her athletic skills in swimming, speed skating and baseball. She went to New Zealand for the British Common Wealth Games as a coach and chaperone for the ladies diving team. She was a talented artist which then led her to her own business of sign painting and vehicle lettering. Many signs from Toronto to South Simcoe were painted by Mabel.
She loved animals. She particularly loved going to the animal shelter to find her pets. She raised horses while she lived on her farm near Alliston. She loved having her family and friends at her cottage on Lake Simcoe where she taught most of them how to swim and boat. She loved building and restoring homes in her spare time. There wasn’t much she couldn’t do or accomplish.
Mabel was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63. Collingwood and long-time supporter and volunteer of the Conservative Party. She never missed an opportunity to vote and she spent countless hours getting to know the politics at all levels of government.
Mabel was predeceased by her parents Harriet and Charles Ware. Predeceased by her siblings; Louise Kirk, Elma Moore, Mary Tyler, Marjorie Walker, June Fisher, Ruth Blackburn, Robert Ware, James Ware and Charles Ware. Mabel was sadly predeceased by her special nephew Bill Tyler and her dear friend Phyllis Boyd.
She was the very proud Aunt of many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
There will be a graveside service at Highland Memory Gardens, Willowdale on Wednesday September 5, 2018 at 12:30 p.m.. If so desired, in memoriam donations in her memory directed to an animal shelter, pet rescue, art school or local minor baseball association in her honour would be greatly appreciated. She would want young people to have the opportunity to love baseball, art and animals as much as she did.
